Debit Card Safety
Preventing Identity Theft
With the recent incidents at some major retailers impacting some credit and debit cardholders, it is even more important to think about safety and security when using your debit or credit card.
At Rockland Trust, we always have your protection in mind. We have rigorous fraud systems in place that actively monitor our customers' accounts for suspicious activity. If we suspect fraud, we will contact you to confirm the fraud, then close your account and re-open it with a new account number.
In addition, there are also steps you can take to protect yourself and limit your risk of fraud or ID theft.
Things you can do to protect your card and your identity include:
- Check your account frequently
You can check your balances and account activity for free via our Online Banking system and Mobile Banking app from your smart phone - this will allow you to quickly recognize and report any suspicious activity in your account. If you do see suspicious activity, call the number on the back your card immediately.
- Sign up for transaction alerts
If you are an online banking customer, you can set up text and email alerts in order to monitor transactions, balances, and more. To set up alerts, click on Alerts under the Preferences category within Online Banking.
- Be mindful of suspicious calls or emails
Watch out for emails from unknown senders that request sensitive information or contain links. You should also be cautious of phone calls attempting to get this type of information. Never give out any personal financial information unless you know you are dealing with a trusted and verified source.
- Check your Credit Report
It's always a good idea to check your credit report regularly for incorrect information or fraudulent activity. You're entitled to one free copy of your credit report every year at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling (877) 322-8228.
