Whether you love to shop or prefer to avoid it, holiday shopping doesn’t have to wreak havoc on your family’s budget.
Here are some guidelines from the National Retail Federation to help you stay in control of your holiday shopping this year:
- Plan ahead. Make a list of everyone you need to buy for. Set a predetermined amount you’re willing to spend and stick to this list whether shopping online or in stores. It is possible to save, shop and be merry!
- Spread out your holiday shopping. Purchase gifts throughout the year or earlier in the season. If you leave shopping until the last minute, you are more likely to make purchases you don’t need because you are feeling rushed and frustrated.
- Think layaway. With a layaway purchase, you typically put down a deposit — a percentage of the purchase price — and pay over time. You take home the merchandise when the item has been paid for in full.
- Look for holiday sales. Many retailers reward email subscribers and loyal customers with discounts. Consider signing up for emails from your favorite retailers to get advance notice of their holiday sales. You may also receive free shipping for online orders.
- Compare prices. You can save time and money by checking prices online. Check out websites that compare prices for items purchased online. Some sites may also compare prices offered at stores in your area.
- Consider gift cards. Rather than worrying about finding the perfect gift for everyone on your list, consider giving a gift card instead. It’s easy and there is no wrong size. Plus, gift cards are accepted almost everywhere, so you know your loved ones will be able to use their gift where they want.
- Donate to a charity instead. There may be people on your list who don’t need or want a physical present or gift card. Consider making them feel extra special by making a charitable donation in their honor. Recipients typically receive a thank-you letter from the charity.
- Adopt a family. The holiday shopping season is also the perfect time of year to pause and give thanks for all you have by remembering others in need. Consider participating in an “adopt a family” event, which allows you to purchase gifts for local families in need. This may be the most powerful shopping you do.
- Stash some cash throughout the year. Rockland Trust’s free savings account is the perfect place to automatically deposit cash so you’re ready for next year’s holiday shopping. For example, just $10 a week can lead to over $500 and because you’re saving through direct deposit, it’s painless. You can open an account online today or visit one of our branches.
