Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence Expands Food Security Program with $10,000 Grant from the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation

Program provides nutritious meals to children and teens at the organization’s 8 Clubhouse locations

Providence, R.I. – March 8, 2022– The Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation has awarded a grant in the amount of $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence (BGCP) for its Food Security Program. This program supports children and teen members across the organization’s eight Clubhouse locations in Providence. In 2021, BGCP served more than 100,000 nutritious meals. This year, BGCP is expanding the program in response to the increase in demand within its community.

“We are honored to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence in providing programs and services which enable children to flourish,” said Edward H. Seksay, President and Chair of the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation. “Daily, nutritious meals helps remove hunger as an impediment to children and teens striving to reach their full potential.”

Through its Food Security Program, BGCP provides critical daily meals to youth, sometimes the only meal their members receive, especially during the summer months. The program consists of breakfast for 595 children; lunch for 605; dinner for 1,085 youth; and healthy snacks for another 300+ kids. The Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation grant will help fund these meals, as BGCP only receives funding from the federal government to provide two meals a day. It is the fourth year Rockland has supported the program.

“Without the support and generosity of the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation, we would not be able to expand our food program to the level in which we are, particularly the late afternoon dinner meals,” said Nicole Dufresne, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence. “We exist to serve Providence youth, no matter what their needs, and we know kids cannot learn, cannot play – and cannot be kids – if they’re hungry.”

In addition to providing meals and snacks for some 1,500 of its members, BGCP will also focus efforts on supporting youth and their families with nutrition education and tips for living a healthy lifestyle.
