As we face unique and uncertain times, one thing remains clear: many small businesses in our local communities need our support now more than ever. Rockland Trust asked on social media for nominations for local small businesses that are making an impact in the communities they serve. . Each Monday in April, Rockland Trust is randomly selecting one deserving small business to receive $1,000*.
We want to highlight the winning businesses, who each are giving to the community in their own unique way. Our April 6 winner is Mr. Carl's Hair & Nail Design, a full-service salon in Somerset.
About Mr. Carl's Hair & Nail Design
Carl Munroe and Cheryl Kelley opened Mr. Carl's Hair & Nail Design in 1968. For more than 50 years, this salon has been family-owned. “The community of Somerset has been very loyal to us over the years,” says Carl.
Mr. Carl’s Hair & Nail Design offers haircuts, color, manicures, pedicures, facials, and hair replacement. Aside from helping neighbors feel beautiful, Mr. Carl’s Hair & Nail Design does a lot of good in the community — supporting the local food bank, raising money for pediatric cancer research and working with the Somerset Lions Club to raise money for the community.
In fact, four employees are Lions Club members and the business has a strong culture of giving back and helping others.
“18 yrs ago our building burnt down, and the community was there for us,” says Cheryl. “We believe that where there is a need, we would like to try and help to pay it forward.”
Due to COVID-19, Mr. Carl’s Hair & Nail Design has had to close with an unknown reopen date. But Carl and Cheryl are heartened by their community.
“Our clients are the best. They have been texting and telling us that they will be there when we open! They have also been ordering hair products from us online and having them shipped to their homes,” they said. “We have been fortunate for more than 52 years to have such loyal clients and friends.”
